Podcast Visibility Options

Podcast Visibility Options

Castos provides 3 different visibility options for your podcast, each catering to a specific need. The most common, and default, podcast visibility option is the Public podcast.

Choosing the right visibility option

  • Public — a public podcast provides a public RSS feed which can be distributed to all podcast directories (Apple Podcasts, Spotify, etc) and makes all episodes available to everyone. This is the most common podcast type.

This podcast type can be monetized with Castos Ads and Castos Commerce Donations

Private — a private podcast is not meant to be publicly distributed and so does not provide a working public RSS feed. Instead, you'll have a generic private podcast RSS feed and the ability to create individual subscriber RSS feeds. Private RSS feeds contain a unique identifier and contain the <itunes:block> tag to prevent most podcast directories from accepting the RSS feed in their public library if an attempt was made to submit it. This type of podcast for private communities or creators who want to keep their episodes for paid subscribers only.

This podcast can be monetized with Castos Ads, Castos Commerce Donations, paid subscription access (via third-party tools), or Apple Podcasts Subscriptions.

    • Generic Private RSS feed — This RSS feed cannot be revoked or disabled so once it's shared, it will be available to the subscriber for the life of the podcast. Sharing this RSS feed is best for one-time purchases of podcast access where access isn't based upon a recurring subscription or for a private community where access also isn't based on a recurring subscription or access duration.
    • Individual Subscriber RSS feeds — Individual subscriber RSS feeds are unique to each subscriber and their email address. Access to the podcast can be enabled or revoked as necessary based upon a recurring subscription or other criteria for podcast access you might have.
  • Hybrid — a hybrid podcast is a mix of both public and private episodes. You'll have the public RSS feed available to distribute selected episodes to all the public podcast directories (Apple Podcasts, Spotify, etc) but you'll also have the ability to share private RSS feeds (either the generic Private RSS feed or the Individual Subscriber RSS feeds as above with private podcasts) to private subscribers for bonus or exclusive content, ad-free listening, early episode access, or archive access.

This podcast can be monetized with Castos Ads, Castos Commerce Donations, paid subscription access (via third-party tools), or Apple Podcasts Subscriptions.
